The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a teenage makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial Champions League match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 last-16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek return to confirm a quarter-final berth.
At 18 years old, Pitarch became the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
This talent is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.
Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.
Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the team.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'
During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the first team and gave him playing time during the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, each day you head to training and each day you have a game," stated Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I have just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.
Pitarch has taken it with displays that have belied his age and experience.
"He is a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He's incredibly dynamic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.
"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize fans might be astonished to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, progressing through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive full international.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.
Speaking recently, the player said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."
This scenario echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine chose La Roja, Brahim opted to represent Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the club pursue trophies to come.
After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager treats me the same. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I must deserve my playing time on the field," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
