The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one released by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
