The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
