The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 people were killed and more than 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the death toll is 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

The victims are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
