New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD released security footage Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
