Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Armed Clash at Nigerian School
Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a girls' secondary school in north-western Nigeria, according to police.
The criminal group stormed the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, police confirmed.
The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their dormitory, according to a statement.
One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.
Witnesses reported a considerable contingent of armed individuals, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.
Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the armed men then led a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.
The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and potential getaway paths.
