Democrats Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution

Democratic officials expressed fury after former President Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "betrayers" and declared they should be taken into custody and sentenced "by death" following their posting of a controversial video.

The Message That Sparked the Dispute

The video footage, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in defense or defense positions.

"Similar to us, you all swore an pledge to protect and support this constitution," the lawmakers stated in the short video. "At present, the dangers to our constitution aren't just from overseas, but from within our own country. Our statutes are explicit, you can reject unlawful commands, you can reject unlawful commands, you have to decline illegal orders. No one has to execute commands that break the law or our constitution."

The Former President's Angry Response

The video message reportedly prompt a angry reaction from the ex-president.

On later in the week, Trump posted on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional publication, he wrote: "This constitutes really bad, and Dangerous to our Country. Their statements cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Representatives React

Following Trump's remarks on that day, Democratic leadership published a unified declaration censuring the remarks.

"Political violence has no role in this nation," they declared. "Representatives who were featured in the video all served our country with tremendous national pride and honor. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's offensive and risky calls for execution against elected officials, and call on House Republicans to forcefully do the same."

The opposition officials also said that they had been in communication with protective services "to guarantee the safety of these officials and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must without delay take down these radical online messages and withdraw his dangerous language before he gets someone killed," the declaration added.

Representatives' Defiant Answer

The officials who were featured in the video also released a declaration.

"We serve as veterans and defense specialists who care for this nation and took an pledge to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we intend to honor it. No intimidation, pressure, or call for violence will prevent us from that important duty."

"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president considers it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to restate the law," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their support as they execute their pledge to the constitution and obligation to follow only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."

They added: "The entire nation must come together and condemn the former president's calls for our execution and political violence. This is a period for moral clarity."

Additional Political Comments

The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's comments and posted on online networks: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is demanding the capital punishment of government members."

He added: "This is an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this without delay and unconditionally."

The Republican House speaker supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "treason", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "It is very harmful, you have important representatives of Congress advising soldiers to disobey orders, I think that's historic in US history."

The Republican leader also reportedly stated to media outlets that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the offense of treason" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and determine all that."

Administration Response

During a executive branch meeting on that day, when asked by a journalist, "Would the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary responded: "Certainly not."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is addressing," the representative said. "You have current representatives of the federal government who conspired to orchestrate a digital communication to members of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers encouraging them to defy the commander in chief's proper directives."

She said: "The integrity of our military depends on the hierarchy, and if that system is compromised, it can result in people getting killed, it can cause chaos, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are basically supporting."
