Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer behind many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the pastel suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose impact on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
