An Account of Surprising Kindness: When a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground

During the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to book accommodation when I arrived, but upon reaching the city, a big convention was taking place and every single youth hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

Hailing from Singapore, I considered maybe I could just sleep at the airport – but quickly found Canberra airport, not like the one back home, is not open 24 hours. With no idea what my next move should be and growing worried, I hopped on a city-bound bus and found myself drifting near a gaming venue, thinking I might spend the evening in an establishment operating 24/7. This was not ideal at my peak for acing a crucial interview the next day, yet, as a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.

Our society requires more people like that woman.

It seems I seemed lost as a young woman spotted me walking aimlessly through downtown and asked whether I needed help. I explained my situation and right away she offered I was welcome to sleep on a spare mattress of her dormitory at ANU – an ideal turn of events, given that my the important interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering a meal: one of the stuffed baguettes she had from her work shift. I was able to use warm shower facilities and a secure location to rest to spend the night.

With hindsight, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she accepted as a young woman letting a guy she’d just met crash at her place. Back then I was in my male privilege bubble and not even thinking to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, I am astonished she offered that help – and remain deeply appreciative.

I didn’t end up study at the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet her again, yet her memory has stayed with me her selfless deed of generosity. I hope karma has returned her good deed abundantly. We could all use more people like that woman.
