"When are you chatting with the band?" an inquiry arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple high-profile fans have publicly petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the most iconic bands, they're a close gang. Their music videos repeatedly depict them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless joy you inevitably think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the ultimate honor. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to form a group."

"And thus everyone is invited to be the honorary member of Haim."

Historic Milestone

The group are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I watch the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge milestone," says Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The album came out of a period of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The lyrics track breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed resilience called for a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The band's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Legacy

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their place in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an international following.

But Haim will forever be their top commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
